Consultation Preparation

How to prepare for a more useful first legal consultation

Use a timeline, key-document folders and a short question list to make a first consultation more productive.

You do not need every document before contacting an attorney. A short and accurate timeline is often more useful than a large stack of unsorted files.

Write a one-page timeline

List dates, events, participants, related documents and the next known deadline. Mark uncertain facts as uncertain rather than filling gaps with guesses.

Organize by source

Separate court or agency papers, contracts, payment records, photos, medical files and messages. Preserve originals and name copies clearly.

List your three most important questions

For example: What is the most urgent deadline? What are the realistic options? What are the main risks and likely scope of each path?

Start with the facts and the deadline.

Even if your file is incomplete, tell us what happened, when it happened, and whether a court date or response deadline is approaching. Call directly for urgent matters.
